Meet Cleo Oliver.
She's 13, a little too tall and a little too skinny. She's got unruly black hair and green eyes that change depending on the color she's wearing or sometimes, the weather. (Yes, unruly black hair and green eyes, just like another kid in another book series, but there's no scar on her head and her magic doesn't come from a wand but from a makeup kit, her mother's closet, and her own imagination.)
Cleo just wants to be like everyone else. The kids at her school in New York City usually don't notice her, and when they do, they call her names. She's just a teen trying to figure out who she is.
It's harder still because her mother's a famous fashion model. One afternoon, Cleo and her mom play around with makeup and Mrs. Oliver's wardrobe. Cleo is amazed by the transformation. She sees that maybe when she grows up, she won't be such an ugly duckling. When her best friend Robbi Richards stops by, she doesn't even recognize Cleo.
Cleo and Robbi go out shopping, and Cleo, "disguised" as an adult, overhears some classmates talking about a school election that they're planning to rig.
It's up to Cleo to stop them and along the way, she falls in love. Cleo comes up with disguise after disguise in order to save the election and help the cool new British guy at school.
